Another state and Bread
We need to add Vermont to our list of visited-together states!
Two weekends ago, Dan and I drove up to Vermont to visit his aunt and view the fall leaves. It was beautiful! We went on the last good weekend and enjoyed the nip in the air and the beauty of a morning walk to a lake surrounded by brightly colored hills. Go to Dan's digital photos to see for yourself. :-)
We're trying to go see things now - when our son arrives next year, we don't think long car trips will be quite as easy.
I've been making bread for our family since January and have been getting tired of the same old bread recipes. Tonight I made French-style bread ( I guess you can't make *real* French bread unless you have a special sort of oven - all the bread books like to talk about the difficulty of real French bread ). The "health" bread from my 1952 cookbook got a thumbs down from Dan but Best Recipe's wheat bread was a winner. I tried to culture sour dough last winter, but realized that sour dough may culture better when humid. Maybe I should try that again soon?

Those were great pictures! Vermont is really beautiful, but so is Princeton :). I guess we miss out on that "fall colors" thing in California. In the last couple weeks it has abruptly shifted from the "summer" season to the "not summer" season, complete with rain and night time lows in the 40's. "Not summer" is definitely preferable to summer. Now we can see snow on the mountains!! :)
I want to start making bread too!! For the past year and a half I've been using the automatic breadmaker thing, but now it is broken so I'm going to learn the real way. Once the landlady gets our oven fixed, that is. Any favorite recipes/tips?
